How Sotheby's is Bringing Artificial Intelligence to the Art World

Thread Genius is a startup which defines itself as "a set of algorithms that can both instantly identify objects and then recommend images of similar objects to the viewer".

As Amazon and Netflix are able to offer similar product recommendations to the user based on their current tastes and buying patterns, Sotheby's brings this to the art world. After acquiring Thread Genius, Sotheby's goal is to understand its audience's tastes by providing them similar recommendations on previous purchases and/or viewing patterns.

However, it may come with a few limitations. Art is not like choosing a stainless steel pan on Amazon or a movie to watch on Netflix. If someone is looking for a Boticelli, they do not care to see Boticelli like paintings. Although, the venture is new, I am definitely curious to see where they take it.

Below you can find some examples of the current project.
